Edward Baines published a second Lancashire work but left it to William White to publish the Yorkshire directory in an updated version at the end of the 1830s. This appeared in 1837 and 1838 (West Riding in two volumes) and 1840 (East and North Ridings in one volume). None of the volumes actually refers to a second edition as such.

We know that new maps were prepared for this edition. The Preface to the Third Volume of the three-volume work notes that: As is already observed in the preparatory remarks appended to the two West Riding Volumes, recently published by W White, Yorkshire … .

... The whole is illustrated by an entirely new Map of the East and North Ridings, engraved expressly for this Work, and neatly coloured; shewing the railways and all other recent improvements with the boundaries of the Wapentakes and Boroughs.

Map of the West Riding of Yorkshire divided into wapentakes and boroughs; and shewing all its railways, roads, rivers, canals, &c. &c. / drawn and engraved by J.H. Franks for the History & directory of the West RidingFranks, J. H.; White, William (Publisher). 1853. 44 x 57 cm.

This map is in card covers with title New Map of the West Riding of Yorkshire and was on sale for One Shilling.


Both Yorkshire maps were available in covers such as West Riding above (image courtesy of Leeds University Library) or mounted on rollers (see below).

One copy of this map has been seen linen backed and mounted with mahogany rollers to the top and bottom. This map is a good example of how White sold maps mounted with the wooden scrolls.
